Where Australia stands with Solar

Your Energy Transition in Australia

Where energy still used to be a background consideration for Australians back in 2015, it is now a nasty monthly cost full of surprises. What’s caused the sudden blowout in electricity cost? There are several smaller reasons, and one major reason.

In 2016, our national grid was formed, with half of that grid being immediately leased to a Chinese company for 99 years. Any non-Australian ownership in our national grid is for one obvious purpose: to export profits back to that country, and not leave those profits here. Once the national grid was formed, it became possible for electricity produced anywhere in Australia to be sold anywhere in Australia. Curiously, retailed electricity prices didn’t fall, they rose.

Why did this happen? The answer is all about timing. Compared to other countries, Australia had been sluggish to respond to solar panels. It wasn’t until 2009 that domestic solar power entered the Australian market. At this time a list of other nations already had a mature solar industry with a high domestic engagement.

In 2010, the new Gillard government immediately made renewable energy a top priority, and passed legislation for the introduction of a carbon price. Her government also released the High-feed-in tariff, which paid 66 cents for every kwh exported back to the grid. In 2010, this was about four times the amount charged for a kwh, making it a great incentive for early adopters to invest in solar systems costing $20,000+.

Australia today is not even in the top 11 solar countries! Very embarrassing considering that Australia receives the highest average solar irradiance per square meter than any other land mass! Australia is recently ranked #31 of developed nations for emissions performance. The Morrison government appeared to lack  urgency for any emissions control that threatened our coal industry.

Currently, the federal government is heavily involved in subsidising home solar systems, heat-pump hot water systems, and interest free loans to make home solar reachable for most homes. The solar rebate is very good news, because this time, the government is committed by both policy and subsidy. The 2024 government has recognized that it will be embarrassing if Australia, of all countries, is left as the final adopter of domestic solar energy.

NOW is the time to act. The rebate is declining over time with a cut-off date. Don’t just call several solar companies at random and get quotes. In this climate you need recommendations, but more importantly, you need professional advice.  If friends or family feel instinctively that their solar installer did the right thing by them, then check the reviews and if you feel right about it then do it. However, just be aware of the difference between charm and simple honesty when dealing with a solar salesperson. The point is that a lot of people feeling 'great' about their system, won't feel so good at warranty time when their installer company has gone into liquidation 7 years after your install. And that would be about the perfect time to 'liquidate'. It is about the time some systems will show inverter faults and possibly some roofing leaks.

If you're feeling lost with it all then you need a home visit for an independent energy consultation before going ahead. Thrime is not an installer. Our service is to advise you on the solar system that will serve you the best, and to explain it all in ordinary language.

Our 1-hour $100 consultation will give you reliable knowledge of the solar system you can have and what its cost should be. Call us now.

Founded in 2015 by our parent company: Erthbeet Pty Ltd, the trademark name Thrime is also used as a verb to describe the rise of civilization from the dark and dirty era of the 20th century. We like to say that humankind is finally beginning to thrime. Thrime is our own invention for a term that describes the process of the world finally rising from fire with the technology to harvest solar radiation as a source of energy. Now that we are thriming, the future holds less darkness and anxiety for not just our grandchildren, but our own living children before us! Smile. Thrime!

Similarly, solar panels are grouped into 'strings' of panels on a roof, and all need to face the same way. Getting this direction to the best angle for a solar array is critical to performing a good job over a 40 year term.

Solar energy may not be the final story in our energy supply, but it will be here for a long time. The great thing about solar is that it enables a household to create its own energy, free from the grid. A future of homes without any need of the grid is headed into reality as you read this article. Within just 20 years, few homes in developed countries will have remained grid-connected. Most individuals will drive electric vehicles, and will be feeding their car with their own harvested electricity. This will mean no more blackouts, no fuel cost crises, and car availability always. In the event that someone's power breaks down, either battery deliveries or car supply will easily keep the house up and running until repair.
